Jokowi Warns The World Food Crisis Is Getting Worse

Now there are 66 countries that will collapse and one by one has started due to the food crisis.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) warned that the food crisis in the world in the future will get worse. Many countries are currently experiencing a collapse and are unable to meet the food needs of their people.

"Now there are 66 countries that are about to collapse and one by one they have started. This is a very difficult situation. The health crisis, the food crisis, the energy crisis, have entered the financial crisis. For food alone, it is terrible," Jokowi said at a briefing ceremony. Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jakarta, Tuesday, August 23, 2022.

Jokowi said the conflict between Russia and Ukraine contributed to the problem of the world food crisis. The war made the supply of commodities originating from the two countries, especially wheat, halted, causing world stocks to run low.

"When I went to Ukraine to meet President Zelenskyy, he said that in Ukraine there were 22 million tons of wheat stock. Plus there was a new harvest of 55 million tons. This means that there are 77 million tons of wheat in Ukraine," said Jokowi.

Jokowi added that when he went to Russia, he received information that the stock of wheat reached 130 million tons. So in total, the existing stock in the two countries reaches 207 million tons.

"Indonesian people eat only 31 million tons of rice a year. This up to 207 million tons can't get out of Ukraine and Russia. You can imagine how countries import from there, especially Africa at this time. They are in very difficult conditions," he said.

This condition is getting worse with many countries starting to stop their food commodity exports abroad. This step was taken to meet domestic needs first.
