President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) today, Wednesday (20/4/2022), inaugurated a state-owned holding in the defense sector called Defense Industry Indonesia (Defend ID) in Surabaya,
President Jokowi also launched a number of strategic SOE programs for the defense industry.
"By saying Bismillahirrahmanirrahim, I am launching the holding and strategic program for the defense industry BUMN Defend ID today," Jokowi said as broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube.
Jokowi stated that Indonesia must immediately build the independence of the defense industry. In addition, it also encourages the domestic defense industry to be ready to enter a new era of competition.
"It can't be partial, we have to strengthen the industry. We also have to build the ecosystem so that it grows and develops more advanced. Therefore I appreciate the establishment of a defense industry BUMN holding," said Jokowi.
Jokowi admitted that he had been waiting for the realization of this state-owned defense holding to be introduced to the public. Jokowi also stated that he had continued to pursue the realization of this holding.
"I've been waiting for this for a long time and I'm pursuing it so that our state-owned defense industry is much more consolidated. The ecosystem is getting stronger. Able to compete in a healthy and profitable way," he explained.
Jokowi emphasized that he would record the promise of establishing this defense industry holding. "I took note of this promise. Defend ID will become the world's top 50 defense companies. That's the first," he said.
