Densus 88 Mention How NII Overthrows Government: Triggering Chaos

The scheme is listed in the minutes of the NII network meeting which was found by Densus 88 after the arrest of 16 suspects in West Sumatra.

The Special Detachment (Densus) 88 Anti-terror Police said that one of the ways prepared by the Indonesian Islamic State (NII) group to overthrow the government before the 2024 elections was to create chaos in Indonesia.

The scheme is listed in the minutes of the NII network meeting which was found by Densus 88 after the arrest of 16 suspects in West Sumatra some time ago.

In addition, the suspects also gave similar information when examined by investigators.

The Head of the Operational Assistance Section (Kabagbanops) of the Anti-terror Detachment 88 of the National Police Kombes Aswin Siregar said that this group was trying to destabilize the country as happened during the New Order era in 1998 which led to the downfall of President Suharto.

"One of the things they said was that they would create chaos like 1998," said Aswin, Thursday (21/4).

However, Aswin refused to show the minutes of the NII meeting. He was not able to specify when and where the NII meetings were intensively held.

Aswin only explained that the recent disclosure of the NII network in several areas was a new investigation carried out by Detachment 88 with the owl symbol on it. "Investigators are still developing," said Aswin.

The police also cannot immediately believe the information or documents obtained without having other comparative evidence.

"We are still exploring what they mean. These are initial statements in the investigation," said Aswin.

He said the arrest of the suspected NII terrorists was a form of prevention before acts of terrorism occurred in Indonesia.

Aswin emphasized that Densus 88 was given the authority to prevent acts of terror based on Law Number 5 of 2018 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Terrorism.

"We take it up front before it reaches a level that endangers or disrupts public safety. We are not like we used to be by waiting for new events to make arrests,” said the middle officer.

According to him, the NII terrorist network often recruits from the central level to the regional level. He referred to the terrorist network cells arrested in West Sumatra as the 'Kecamatan' group in NII.

Meanwhile, five NII terrorist members were arrested in the Greater Tangerang area as 'Regencies/Cities' in NII.

According to Aswin, they describe the classification of their membership as administrative areas in Indonesia. "That's why it's difficult if we imagine their concept with us," he said. (antara, cnnindo)
