Previously, Indonesia and the UAE had established a cooperation agreement in the defense sector which was signed on February 24, 2020 in Abu Dhabi.
Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and United Arab Emirates Defense Minister Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi signed a defense industrial development cooperation protocol between the two countries, in Abu Dhabi, Thursday, June 30, 2022.
"Cooperation in the defense sector, especially the defense industry, is very important for both countries, especially for the development of the defense industry in the future," Prabowo said in a written statement.
This protocol aims to provide a way forward to promote and develop bilateral cooperation in the defense industry sector between the two sides.
There are several scopes in this protocol. Among them are formulating strategies to improve the alignment of the strategic planning of the defense industries of the two countries and formulating policies for joint research and development.
In addition, this protocol concerns co-production, international marketing, national offset programs, technology licensing, provision of international talent, and investment in human resources.
On the same occasion, Prabowo also witnessed the signing of a cooperation between the Indonesian defense industry SOEs. PT PAL with the UAE government and PT Dirgantara Indonesia and PT Pindad with the UAE private sector.

The agreement includes visits between Armed Forces officials at various levels, exchange of information, and cooperation in science and technology in the defense industry. Then, capacity building, human resource development, and other areas that are mutually agreed upon.
To carry out the agreement, a Joint Defense Cooperation Plan (JDCP) meeting was held in December 2021. This is the first step in discussing the potential for defense cooperation between Indonesia and the UAE. (Ministry of Defense, antara)
