149 Indonesian Workers Died in Malaysia, DPR Requests Investigation

149 Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) died at the Immigration Detention Center (DTI) Sabah, Malaysia, from 2021 to June 2022.

The DPR has urged the government to form a task force (satgas) to investigate information that 149 Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) died in Malaysia.

Data from the Coalition of Sovereign Migrant Workers (KBMB) recorded that 149 PMI died at the Immigration Detention Center (DTI) Sabah, Malaysia, from 2021 to June 2022.

"It is necessary to form a task force with integrated coordination to monitor Indonesian workers abroad," said Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday, June 29, 2022.

The daily chairman of the Gerindra Party DPP said that the findings need not be used as a polemic. All parties are asked not to blame each other.

Inter-agency coordination must be improved. This is because the handling of PMI, whether problematic or not, is a legal step that is not easy.

Sufmi appreciated the response of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The agency will follow up on the findings in Malaysia. (medcom)
